Black Nerone Rice
Suma Black Rice Nerone 500g is a striking wholegrain rice with a naturally deep black-purple colour, gently nutty flavour and satisfyingly firm, slightly chewy texture. Also known as Nero or Nerone black rice, it makes a brilliant alternative to traditional white rice when you want something with a little more character on the plate.
Once cooked, the grains retain their distinctive colour and pleasant bite, making black rice particularly good for grain bowls, colourful salads and side dishes. Its nutty character pairs beautifully with roasted vegetables, seafood, chicken, Asian-inspired dressings and punchy ingredients such as sesame, chilli and soy sauce. It can also be used in sweeter dishes, including black rice pudding with coconut milk and tropical fruit.
At i4C, we love Nerone rice when the rice itself deserves to be part of the presentation. That dramatic dark colour looks fantastic against bright vegetables, herbs and seafood, while the slightly chewy texture makes even a simple rice salad feel much more substantial.

Why does Nerone black rice have such a dark colour?
Its distinctive black-purple appearance comes from naturally occurring pigments called anthocyanins, which are also responsible for the deep colours found in foods such as blueberries, blackberries and purple cabbage.
Does black rice take longer to cook than white rice?
Generally, yes. Because black rice retains its outer bran layer, it normally requires a longer cooking time than standard white rice. The finished grains should be tender while still retaining a pleasantly firm bite.
Why does the cooking water turn purple when making black rice?
The natural pigments in the outer layers of the grain are released into the water during cooking, which can turn it a striking purple colour. This is completely normal and is part of the character of black rice.
