Jasmine Rice

Poon’s London Jasmine Rice 250g is a fragrant long-grain rice with a soft, moist texture and delicate floral aroma. Once cooked, the slender grains become tender and slightly sticky, making them ideal for soaking up sauces and serving alongside the bold, aromatic flavours found across Chinese and South-East Asian cooking.

Its subtle sweetness makes jasmine rice a particularly good match for Thai curries, Korean-inspired dishes, sticky glazed meats, stir-fries and chilli-rich sauces. Simply rinse thoroughly under cold running water before cooking to remove excess surface starch and prepare the grains for cooking.

Why should jasmine rice be rinsed before cooking?

Rinsing removes loose starch from the surface of the grains. This helps prevent excessive starchiness during cooking and allows the characteristic texture of the jasmine rice to come through more clearly.

What gives jasmine rice its distinctive aroma?

Jasmine rice naturally contains an aromatic compound called 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, which is responsible for much of its characteristic fragrance. The same naturally occurring compound is also associated with the aroma of foods such as freshly baked bread.

Is jasmine rice the same as basmati rice?

No. Although both are aromatic long-grain varieties, they have noticeably different characteristics. Basmati generally cooks into longer, drier and more separate grains, while jasmine rice has a softer, moister and slightly stickier finished texture.
