Dried Black Beans

Centaur Black Beans 1kg are dried black beans with a rich, earthy flavour and satisfyingly creamy texture once cooked. A staple of Mexican, Latin American and Caribbean cooking, black beans are brilliant for adding substance to everything from burritos and tacos to chilli, soups, salads and rice bowls.

Their ability to absorb spices and seasonings makes them particularly versatile. Simmer with cumin, smoked paprika and garlic for a simple taco filling, stir into a smoky bean chilli, or pair with rice, avocado, salsa and lime for an easy burrito bowl. They can also be blended into dips, smashed onto toast or used to make homemade black bean burgers.

We love having dried black beans in the i4C kitchen cupboard because they're the starting point for so many good meals. Cook a generous batch and you've got something ready for tacos one night, a quick rice bowl the next and plenty of opportunities for experimenting with different spices and sauces.

Do dried black beans need to be soaked before cooking?

Soaking black beans overnight can shorten their cooking time and encourage more even cooking, although they can also be cooked from dry with additional time. After soaking, drain them and cook in fresh water until completely tender.

How much do dried black beans increase in size when cooked?

Dried beans absorb a considerable amount of water during soaking and cooking. As a general guide, 100g of dried black beans will typically produce around 200–250g of cooked beans, although the exact yield can vary.

When should salt be added when cooking dried black beans?

Black beans can be cooked in salted water, and seasoning the cooking liquid helps flavour the beans throughout rather than only seasoning their surface afterwards. Aromatics such as garlic, onion, bay leaves and herbs can also be added to the cooking water for extra flavour.
