  • Product Description

    Tiptree, from Wilkin & Sons.

Medlars are a rare and unlikely fruit nowadays, but a century ago you might have rounded off your dinner with a glass of port, hazelnuts and a few medlars eaten with a spoon straight out of the skin. The texture would have been like chestnut puree and the flavour distinctive. The ripe fruit, which are nut-brown and leathery, can only be eaten raw after 'bletting'. Bletting is straight from the French word, blettir, to make soft. Although not native - they originate from south-east Europe and south-west Asia - they can still be found growing wild in hedgerows and woodland, with their large white flowers as fine as any fruit blossom in spring. Medlar Jelly has a very short production run and only a few jars are produced each year.
