Desiccated Coconut

Desiccated Coconut 1kg is a versatile baking and cooking ingredient with a naturally sweet, creamy coconut flavour and a fine, slightly chewy texture. Made from dried, finely shredded coconut flesh, it brings plenty of tropical flavour without adding excess moisture, making it particularly useful for cakes, biscuits, traybakes and confectionery.

A store-cupboard favourite for much more than baking, desiccated coconut works beautifully in coconut macaroons, energy balls, granola and homemade chocolate treats. It can also be toasted until golden for a nuttier flavour and crisp texture, then scattered over yoghurt, porridge, fruit or desserts. In savoury cooking, try stirring it into curries, chutneys and spice blends or using it to add texture to coatings.

Key Features:

  • Supplied in a generous 1kg catering-size bag.
  • Finely shredded for easy measuring, mixing and portioning.
  • A convenient dry ingredient for regular baking and batch preparation.
  • Can be toasted to develop a deeper, roasted coconut character.
  • Suitable for both sweet and savoury recipes.

Recipe Inspiration:

  • Make a classic coconut and lime loaf cake, finishing it with a sharp lime drizzle and a generous scattering of desiccated coconut.
  • Roll chocolate truffles in lightly toasted desiccated coconut for an easy homemade treat with extra texture.
  • Stir desiccated coconut into a fragrant chicken curry with coconut milk, ginger, chilli and garam masala to add body and richness to the sauce.
  • Mix desiccated coconut with rolled oats, honey, seeds and dried fruit before baking until crisp for a tropical homemade granola.

How do you toast desiccated coconut?

Spread the desiccated coconut in a thin layer on a baking tray and toast it in a moderate oven, stirring regularly, until evenly golden. You can also toast small quantities in a dry frying pan over a low heat, keeping it moving as coconut can brown quickly.

Can desiccated coconut be rehydrated?

Yes. Desiccated coconut can be soaked in warm water or milk for a short time when a recipe calls for a softer, plumper coconut texture. Once hydrated, drain away any excess liquid before using it.

Why is desiccated coconut used in baking?

Because much of its natural moisture has been removed, desiccated coconut provides concentrated coconut flavour and texture while giving you greater control over the liquid in a bake. This makes it particularly useful in recipes where the balance of wet and dry ingredients matters.
