Butter Muslin

Butter Muslin is a fine, lightweight cotton cloth designed for straining, filtering and wrapping ingredients in the kitchen. Also known as cheesecloth or muslin cloth, its closely woven fabric allows liquid to drain through while holding back finer solids, making it particularly useful for homemade cheese, yoghurt, preserves, stocks and infused liquids.

Use butter muslin to strain fruit when making clear jellies, drain yoghurt for a thicker consistency, separate curds and whey during cheese making, or bundle herbs and spices together for stocks and sauces. The generous 1 metre length can also be cut into smaller pieces to suit different kitchen tasks.

Key Features:

  • Supplied as a 1 metre length.
  • Fine woven cloth for effective straining and filtering.
  • Can be cut to the required size.
  • Suitable for a wide variety of food preparation tasks.
  • Helps separate fine solids from liquids.
  • Useful for preserving, cheese making and traditional cookery techniques.
  • Flexible material can be folded or layered when finer filtration is required.

Usage Ideas:

  • Line a sieve with butter muslin to drain yoghurt overnight for a thick consistency suitable for homemade labneh.
  • Use the cloth to strain cooked fruit when making clear apple jelly, redcurrant jelly or other homemade preserves.
  • Line a colander with muslin when making homemade ricotta or soft cheese to help separate the curds from the whey.
  • Wrap herbs and whole spices inside a small piece of muslin and tie securely to create a reusable-style bouquet garni pouch for stocks, soups and sauces.

What is the difference between butter muslin and regular cheesecloth?

Butter muslin generally has a finer, tighter weave than many standard cheesecloths. This makes it particularly useful when working with small curds or when a recipe requires finer filtration.

Why is muslin used when making clear fruit jelly?

Muslin allows juice to slowly pass through while retaining fruit pulp and other solids. For a particularly clear jelly, the fruit is usually allowed to drain naturally rather than squeezing the cloth, as squeezing can push fine particles into the juice.

Can butter muslin be folded to create a finer filter?

Yes. Folding the cloth into multiple layers reduces the size of the gaps that liquid passes through. This can be useful when straining particularly fine particles or when a cleaner finished liquid is required.
