What is the difference between panettone and traditional British Christmas cake?

Although both are festive favourites, they're quite different. Traditional British Christmas cake is dense, rich and packed with dried fruit, often soaked in alcohol and covered with marzipan and icing. Italian panettone is a naturally leavened sweet bread with a much lighter, airy structure. It's generally less rich than a traditional Christmas fruitcake and doesn't require any icing or decoration.

Why does traditional Italian panettone take so long to make?

Authentic panettone is known for its lengthy preparation process. Natural leavening allows the dough to develop slowly, creating the characteristic airy structure and delicate flavour. Traditional production can involve several stages of mixing, proving and baking, often taking more than a day to complete. This careful process is an important part of Italian panettone-making tradition.

Why is panettone traditionally given as a Christmas gift in Italy?

Panettone has long been associated with Christmas celebrations in Milan, where the tradition originated. Over time, it became a popular festive gift throughout Italy, often exchanged between family, friends and colleagues as a gesture of goodwill. Today, beautifully packaged panettone remains a favourite Italian Christmas present, particularly when paired with coffee, chocolates or a bottle of sparkling wine.
