Dried Wakame Seaweed

Yutaka Dried Wakame Seaweed 500g is a classic Japanese seaweed with a gentle savoury taste and a soft, silky bite once rehydrated. If you have ever had miso soup in a restaurant, wakame is often the seaweed you have seen floating through the broth, adding colour and a clean umami note without overpowering the dish. It is sold dried, so it is easy to portion, and it expands quickly in water, meaning a little goes a long way. Use dried wakame seaweed in miso soup, ramen, noodle bowls and brothy seafood dishes, or rehydrate it for a simple seaweed salad with cucumber, sesame and a sharp dressing.

Key Features:

  • 100% wakame seaweed.
  • Quick to rehydrate and easy to portion.
  • Adds natural umami flavour and tender texture.
  • Suitable for soups, salads, noodles and rice bowls.
  • Size: 500g

Recipe Inspiration:

  • Miso soup with tofu and spring onions, adding wakame at the end for a classic finish.
  • Cucumber and wakame seaweed salad with sesame, rice vinegar and a touch of soy sauce.
  • Ramen style noodle bowl with wakame, sweetcorn, mushrooms and a jammy boiled egg.
  • Seafood rice bowl with wakame, prawns, avocado and a ginger lime dressing.

How long should I soak dried wakame seaweed before using it?

Most dried wakame rehydrates quickly, so a short soak in cold water is usually enough, then drain it well. If you are adding it to a hot soup, you can also rehydrate it briefly and add it near the end so it stays tender rather than overcooked.

How much dried wakame should I use per portion?

Start small because it expands a lot once rehydrated. For a bowl of soup or a small salad, a modest pinch is often plenty, then you can scale up once you know how much volume you like.

Why does wakame sometimes taste very salty and how do I soften that flavour?

Dried seaweed can carry a naturally briny edge. After soaking, give the wakame a quick rinse and drain it well, then pair it with bright flavours like rice vinegar, citrus, ginger or chilli to keep the overall taste balanced.
