What are the food allergens on the warning list?

Under UK Food Information Regulations (FIR 2014) and FSA guidance, there are 14 major food allergens that must always be declared if used as an ingredient. These are: Celery, Cereals containing gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, khorasan), Crustaceans (e.g. prawns, crab, lobster), Eggs, Fish, Lupin, Milk, Molluscs (e.g. mussels, squid, oysters), Mustard, Nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pistachios, macadamia), Peanuts, Sesame seeds, Soya, Sulphur dioxide and sulphites (when above 10mg/kg or 10mg/L).

How many food allergens must be labelled under UK law?

There are 14 allergens that must always be clearly indicated on labels and menus when they are present in a food or drink product.

What is the allergen warning on labels?

The allergen warning (sometimes called an “allergy advice statement”) is a clear indication on food packaging or menus that highlights which of the 14 allergens are present.

On pre-packed foods: allergens must be emphasised in the ingredients list (e.g. bold, CAPITALS, underlined, or a different colour). Example: Ingredients: Wheat flour (GLUTEN), Milk powder (MILK).

On non-prepacked foods (restaurants, cafés, catering): businesses must provide allergen information in writing (menus, chalkboards) or verbally if asked.

On pre-packed for direct sale (PPDS) foods (e.g. sandwiches made and packaged on-site): full ingredient and allergen labelling is required, following Natasha’s Law (from Oct 2021).
